Chemical in Toothpaste tied to Osteoporosis in Women

Triclosan, which was recently banned from hand sanitizers due to "being found to disrupt hormone activity" is now being seen as a problem in toothpaste. Triclosan is still found in some soaps and mouthwash products. Seen as a major problem, all products which incorporate that ingredient should likely be banned.
In a study of more than 1800 women, those with the highest levels of triclosan in urine samples had a lower Bone Mineral Density than women with lower levels. Osteoporosis was found in the total femur, neck of the femur, intertrochanter area of the femur, lumbar spine and cervical vertebrae. The liklihood of osteoporosis involving these intertrochanter areas was more than two fold higher than the control group.
Triclosan detected in 75% of the Population:
Most people are exposed to Triclosan due to consumer products as well as exposure to water supplies and animal food products. In 2003 and 2004 about 75% of the U.S. population had detectable levels of Triclosan in their urine.
In September 2016, the FDA banned Triclosan in consumer antiseptic washes. In December 2017 it was banned in healthcare antiseptics. The FDA took these action after it was determined that manufacturers had not demonstrated that Triclosan was "generally recognized as safe and effective" when added to these products. In April 2019, the FDA issued a final rule banning Triclosan from consumer hand sanitizers effective April 2020.
A recent FDA consumer update releasd on May 16th, 2019 states that, "Triclosan can be found in many places today including clothing, kitchenware, furniture and toys to prevent bacterial contamination".
Overall, this means that long term exposure to Triclosan is higher than previously thought and raises concern about the potential risks associated with the use of this ingredient over a lifetime.
